Removing the Power Steering Pump on a Ford Focus Mk2 (1.8 TDCi)
If the power steering (PAS) pump fails (humming noise, heavy steering, leaks), it must be replaced. The procedure can be performed yourself if you have the tools and a ramp or lift.
Required items for replacement:
- Spanner and socket set (including 18mm).
- New hose clamps (Jubilee clips).
- Power steering fluid (WSS-M2C204-A2 / green).
- Auxiliary drive belt kit (old ones are cut off).
Choosing a Power Steering Pump for the 1.8 TDCi
The original Ford power steering pump part number is 1484948. Due to the high cost of the original part, quality aftermarket alternatives are often chosen:
- MSG FO044
- Reikanen P0702
- Motorherz P1015HG
There is no scheduled replacement interval for the pump itself (it is replaced based on condition). It is recommended to renew the power steering fluid every 100,000 km or every 2–3 years.
Place the vehicle on a two-post lift or inspection pit.
Disconnect the negative terminal from the battery.
Remove the metal engine undertray (sump guard).
Remove the auxiliary drive belts (the stretch belts on this engine are single-use and not designed to be reinstalled).
Since the belts need replacing, they can be cut with a knife for removal.
Undo the alternator fixings (two bolts and a nut) and disconnect the electrical connectors.
Detach the coolant expansion tank from its mountings and move it to the side (hoses do not necessarily need to be disconnected if the length allows).
To remove the PAS pump, undo the four bolts holding the water pump pulley and remove the pulley. Then unscrew the upper alternator mounting stud and remove the alternator, as it blocks access to the pump.
- Disconnect the high-pressure line (18mm spanner).
- Remove the return hose (leading to the reservoir).
- Undo the bolts securing the pump to the bracket.

Installation is the reverse of removal, using new belts. Install the pump, connect the pipes (use new clips and sealing washers if required). Fill with fluid to the MAX level and bleed the system by turning the steering wheel with the engine off, then with the engine running, constantly checking the level in the reservoir.
