Volkswagen Passat B6 Rear Brake Pad Replacement
The time had come to replace the rear pads on the Passat B6 (recommended interval 60–80,000 km), reminded by a grinding noise when braking. I decided to carry out the work myself, as the procedure requires diagnostic equipment rather than advanced mechanical skills.
For the replacement, I needed:
- Rear brake pad set. Genuine VAG 1K0 698 451 H. Alternatives:
- ATE Ceramic 13.0470-2749.2 (chosen for installation);
- TRW GDB1622;
- NiBK PN-0349.
- Caliper grease.
- 13mm and 15mm spanners (for the caliper guide pins).
- Flathead screwdriver.
- Laptop and VAG-COM (VCDS) diagnostic cable.
Below is the replacement process using VCDS to manage the electronic parking brake.
I opted for the Ceramic series pads. The manufacturer claims they produce less brake dust, keeping the alloy wheels cleaner for longer, and also feature an extended service life.
Comparison of friction lining thickness: new pads versus the old worn-out ones.
Before starting mechanical work, the caliper pistons must be retracted via software.
Connecting the laptop:
- Enter Module 53 (Parking Brake);
- Select Basic Settings 04;
- Select Group 007;
- Click Go!.
You can hear the motors whirring — the pads are retracted, and you can proceed with disassembly.
Remove the wheel. Since the pistons are already retracted (see previous step), only the caliper remains to be removed. Undo the two mounting bolts using a 13mm spanner whilst holding the guide pins with a 15mm spanner. Remove the caliper, take out the old pads and retaining clips. Clean the seating areas, then install the new clips and pads.
Reassemble everything in reverse order. After installing the pads on both sides, the pistons must be engaged and the system adapted.
Closing the pads:
- Module 53 -> Basic Settings 04 -> Group 006 -> Go! (pistons will move towards the disc).
Adaptation:
- In the same menu, select Group 010 -> Go!.
The procedure is complete; there should be no errors on the dashboard.
