Mazda 3 Automatic Gearbox Oil Change
There are many opinions and disagreements regarding whether the oil in a Mazda 3 automatic gearbox needs changing, or if this applies only to manual versions. There is also debate about the method: whether to perform a traditional partial change or a full ATF flush at a dealership using a special machine. A machine replacement for the Mazda 3 is significantly more expensive than a partial one. Not only do you have to pay for the labour, but it also requires twice as much fluid.
In most cases, despite the fact that the new **fluid simply mixes with the old**, a partial ATF change is performed on the Mazda 3. It is not only feasible to do it yourself, but also requires a smaller amount of fluid.
In this photo guide, you can clearly see the process of changing the oil in a Mazda 3 automatic gearbox. We also answer common questions regarding the ATF change on a Mazda 3.
When to change, capacity, and which fluid to use for the Mazda 3 automatic gearbox
The replacement interval for the Mazda 3 automatic gearbox is **every 50,000–60,000 km**. However, there are several signs that it is time to change the ATF: darkening of the fluid, a characteristic burnt smell, or if the gearbox starts to 'jolt'.
It is recommended to **fill with original ATF M-V fluid**; the part number for the 1-litre bottle is 000077112E01. Alternatively, people often choose IDEMITSU ATF TYPE-M, which corresponds to the original specification (1-litre bottle part number: 10113042P).
The original **automatic gearbox oil filter** has the part number FNC1-21-500A. A popular aftermarket alternative is the JS Asakashi JT318K filter, which comes complete with a sump gasket.
The **part number for the original Mazda sealant** is TB12-27-C00.
To change the oil in the automatic gearbox on a Mazda 3, you will need to purchase 5 one-litre bottles of original Mazda ATF, a gearbox oil filter, and sealant.
Pre-prepare a container to catch the old fluid and a couple of spanners (to undo the drain plug and the bolts around the sump perimeter). First, unscrew the plug and wait for the fluid to drain. Then, unscrew and remove the sump (be careful, as fluid will still be dripping).
When changing the ATF in an automatic gearbox, the filter must also be replaced. To remove it, you need to disconnect the connector.
Carefully remove the automatic gearbox oil filter using both hands.
Wait until the oil stops dripping completely. To save time, prepare the gearbox sump for reinstallation.
The transmission sump needs to be thoroughly cleaned of old oil (wash with solvent) and the old sealant must be scraped off.
Do not forget to clean the metal filings off the magnet.
Apply a new layer of sealant to the cleaned sump.
Install the new filter into the gearbox and reconnect the connector.
Then install the automatic gearbox sump pan. Tighten all nuts using a 10mm socket and do not forget to tighten the drain plug.
Now you can proceed to fill with fresh fluid (pour in the same amount that was drained), then check the level in the Mazda's automatic gearbox using the dipstick.
After filling with fresh fluid, start the engine and cycle the gear selector through all modes (keeping your foot on the brake pedal whilst moving the lever).
