Nissan X-Trail T31 Oil Change
Changing the oil on an X-Trail (T31 body) is a procedure that does not require special skills; any car owner can change the engine oil on a Nissan X-Trail. A necessary condition is the availability of an inspection pit or ramps, as you need to reach the drain plug. The procedure will also be significantly simplified if you have an oil filter removal tool, as unscrewing it by hand is not always possible.
Tools and Parts for X-Trail T31 Oil Change
To change the engine oil and oil filter, you will need:
- a 14 mm spanner (for the drain plug);
- an oil filter wrench (cup or claw type);
- a container for waste oil (with a capacity of at least 5 litres);
- a torque wrench (recommended);
- oil, filter and a copper ring for the plug.
The photo guide below shows the main stages of the DIY oil change procedure on a Nissan X-Trail.
When choosing oil and filters, it is recommended to use original consumables:
- NISSAN 5W40 oil (code KE900-90042);
- NISSAN 15208-65F0A oil filter (for petrol engines);
- bolt sealing washer 11026-01M02.
Filling Capacities for Nissan X-Trail T31 Engines
When pouring oil into the engine, you need to know the exact required volume. For the T31 body, the following figures are relevant (volume with filter change):
- MR20DE (2.0 L) — 4.4 litres;
- QR25DE (2.5 L) — 4.6 litres (5.1 L for a completely dry fill, but some remains in the system during a change);
- M9R (2.0 Diesel) — 7.4 litres.
Purchase the necessary volume of oil for the Nissan X-Trail, as well as the oil filter and the plug gasket.
The location of the oil filter differs on various engines (2.0 and 2.5 litres), but the drain plug is located in the sump at the lowest point.
With the engine warmed up and the car positioned over a pit, remove the engine undertray (if fitted) and locate the drain bolt. Unscrew the bolt with a 14 mm spanner, having first placed a container for the oil underneath.
Once the oil has drained (this will take 10-15 minutes), you can proceed to remove the oil filter.
Access to the oil filter depends on the engine. On the 2.5 engine (QR25DE), the filter is located at the front of the cylinder block (accessible from below). On the 2.0 engine (MR20DE), the filter is located on the right behind the wheel; access to it is more difficult.
In this case, we are changing the oil on the 2.0 engine (MR20DE). To reach the filter, you need to unclip the plastic splash guard in the right wheel arch and reach your hand through to the filter. Some oil will spill when unscrewing, so it is worth placing a container under the filter installation site as well.
Take the new oil filter. Before screwing it in, ensure you lubricate its rubber sealing ring with fresh oil.
Replace the copper sealing washer on the drain bolt (it is single-use; reusing it may cause leaks).
Screw in the bolt (torque 34 Nm) and the oil filter (torque about 18 Nm).
Pour in the fresh oil to the required volume, using the dipstick as a guide.
Check the level with the dipstick 5 minutes after filling, then start the engine, let it run, turn it off and check the level again.
