Spark Plug Replacement on the Nissan Qashqai
Changing spark plugs on the Qashqai is part of the vehicle's scheduled maintenance. This means plugs need to be changed at specific intervals; this can be done as a DIY task.
When to change and which plugs to use on the Qashqai
The replacement interval specified in the repair manual differs for standard and platinum plugs. The manual recommends changing standard plugs every 15,000 km and platinum ones every 30,000 km.

How to change spark plugs on the Qashqai
To replace the spark plugs on a Nissan Qashqai with a 1.6L engine, you will need to put in some effort, as access is restricted. You need to remove the engine cover, unscrew the air duct and throttle body (4 bolts requiring an 8 mm socket), then remove the intake manifold (unscrew 5 bolts at the bottom and 2 on the sides; you will need a 10 mm socket), then unscrew the ignition coils (10 mm socket) and only then remove the spark plugs for replacement.
Tools and materials needed:
- new spark plugs;
- new intake manifold gaskets;
- 14 mm spark plug socket (thin-walled);
- flat-blade screwdriver;
- 8 mm and 10 mm spanners or sockets;
- torque wrench.
Open the bonnet to reveal the protective cover and manifold, which prevent access to the spark plugs. These must be removed.
To do this, loosen the hose clamp fastenings and remove the pipe.
Remove the vacuum hose.
Disconnect the connector from the throttle body. Attention: after reconnecting, a throttle valve learning procedure may be required.
Unscrew the manifold mountings from the engine block.
Pull the hose out of the clip and unscrew the mounting.
You now have access to the bolt under the throttle, which also needs to be unscrewed.
Unscrew the 5 bolts on the manifold.
Lift the intake manifold and lay it on its side. Try not to damage the mating surfaces.
To prevent it from falling, secure it with something.
Disconnect the connectors from the ignition coils.
Use a 10 mm socket to unscrew the coils. Remove the spark plugs.
Inspect the old plugs. A brown ring on the insulator ('corona stain') is not a sign of a fault, but there should be no burnt electrodes.
Screw in the new spark plugs (torque 20 Nm), install the new manifold gaskets and reassemble everything in reverse order.
